Children

Schools Programme

In 2012, as in past years, we plant to have a special Schools Programme of author visits running alongside the Festival. The 2011 programme (see below) was made possible with the generous support of Fairywood Library and Guildford Borough Council.

Home-educated children are welcome to join these sessions. For more information, or to arrange an author visit for the 2012 Guildford Book Festival please contact Frances Stanbury.

Andy Briggs

Tarzan: the Greystoke Legacy – Andy Briggs' re-imagining of everyone's favourite jungle hero for the twenty-first century heralds the 2012 Tarzan centenary. Aimed at readers of 9+, this is a heart-stopping adventure story with an ecological message that taps into the concerns of the children of today.

Andy began his writing career working on Hollywood movie projects, and his first children's books were the eight part Hero.com and Villain.net series for Oxford University Press. He's currently working on several exciting TV and feature projects in between his books. Tarzan has been a passion from childhood.

Adam Stower

A brand new picture book from the very talented Adam Stower, a Red House Children's Book winner. Silly Doggy! is a whimsical and charming story of a little girl who really, really wants her own dog.

Adam has an MA in narrative illustration, and during the last decade he has worked as an illustrator for major children's publishers. His hilarious wordless picture book, Slam!, was published in 2005 and Templar is now reissuing the book for a new audience.

Natasha Narayan

Follow Kit Salter and her intrepid friends into the thrilling American Wild West, in the fourth of a humorous, fast-paced series (for ages 9+) that has taken our young heroine to Egypt, India and China.

Natasha Narayan was born in India and emigrated to England at the age of five. She has had many jobs in journalism, including working as a war correspondent in Bosnia. Like Kit Salter, Natasha loves travelling and exploring new places. She hopes to get to see some of the far-flung deserts and mountains that have been the scenes of her heroine's adventures.

Philip Ardagh

The magnificently-bearded Philip Ardagh won the Roald Dahl Funny Prize for the very first Grubtown Tale. When Bunnies Turn Bad is the seventh tale of grubbiness and chaos in his hilarious series, described as perfect for fans of Mr Gum and Horrid Henry. Philip is author of numerous books, including the award-winning Eddie Dickens adventures, now reissued in one volume. The Eddie Dickens trilogy sold just under half a million copies when it was originally published.

Emma Dodd and Kelly Gerrard

A Roman Rescue: the exciting first book in a new graphic novel series illustrated by award-winning artist Emma Dodd and written by K.A. Gerrard, who are both local authors. In this time-travel series, Charlie and his dog, Bandit, accidentally fall into a 'sinkhole' that transports them back to ancient Rome. Luckily Charlie makes friends with a young Roman boy named Cosmo...

Includes Charlie's notebook, packed with facts and sketches about ancient Rome, and teachers' notes will support this Key Stage 1 and 2 topic.

Mark Walden

H.I.V.E. – the Higher Institute of Villainous Education – is where the super villains of movies, books and video-games receive their training. Here is a school where the students are actively encouraged to be as badly behaved as possible, indeed they're taught how to be bad on a scale that most of them had never previously dreamt possible. 'Artemis Fowl would fit in perfectly at H.I.V.E.,' says Eoin Colfer.

Since publication, Mark Walden's H.I.V.E. series has sold over 270,000 copies. The first book was the Richard & Judy Children's Book Club winner of its category.
