Special Book Launch Evening - The Art of G F Watts

Thurs 23 February
Watts Gallery

Join us for an unmissable evening with Dr Nicholas Tromans, Brice Curator of Watts Gallery - Artists' Village celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of G F Watts. The event will take place in the stunning Watts Gallery in Compton.

George Frederic Watts (1817 - 1904) was one of the greatest artists of the 19th century and one of the most charismatic figures in the history of British art. As a young man Watts exhibited alongside Turner, and by the end of his career was influential upon Picasso.

Watts was seen also as more than an artist - a philanthropic visionary whose art charted the progress of humanity in the modern world.

“I had no idea that here in Surrey, there was a collection of such richness and a story of such depth. That one man with his devoted wife could leave so much - which makes Compton a unique artists’ village and Watts one of the most important artists and philanthropists of the 19th century.”
